DAVID KUHN, Producer
David has extensive experience in documentary film production, journalism, photography and law. He has served as Director of The Eisenhower Project since 2012, advocating for criminal and social justice reform. He recently directed and produced Unbanked on the story of Bitcoin as a means for social justice (2025) and California Story on the cost to communities of color exacted by California’s draconian ‘gang documentation’ policies (2025). He is developing Democracy on the battle to save the American Republic (2025), and recently produced Devil Put The Coal In The Ground on the ravages of coal and drugs in West Virginia (2024), Life After Hate: Battle for the Soul of a Nation which examines the root causes of hatred among the radicalized Alt Right (2022), and Give or Take a feature on one man’s journey to accept his father and evolve (2020). Other films include the acclaimed feature doc The King (2016, Grammy, Emmy nominated) on the life of Elvis Presley as a metaphor for the rise and fall of the American empire, a short film in Cuba The Cyclist (Una Cyclista) for “The New Yorker Presents...” series on Amazon (2016), and Capturing the Friedmans (2003, Oscar nominated).
His films have appeared at the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival and many others. He has filmed extensively in North, South, and Central America, Europe, Asia, and Africa, including productions in Afghanistan, Ghana, Patagonia, Guantanamo Bay, and mainland Cuba. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2019 for “Best Music Film” and is a voting member of the Recording Academy. David recently served as a judge for the 42nd 43rd and 44th Annual News and Documentary Emmy® Awards for The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. David graduated from Harvard (A.B. 1989) with a degree in economics, played quarterback on the Ivy League champion Harvard football team (1987), and graduated Cum Laude from Indiana University School of Law (J.D. 1993). David lives in Brooklyn, NY with his son Bodhi, a fifth grader at PS 29.
